On 23 June, 2009 the former Armenian deputy Prosecutor General Gagik Jahangiryan was amnestied and released from Yerevan “Kentron” penitentiary.

We would recall that on 23 March, 2008 the Yerevan General Jurisdiction court of Kentron and Nork-Marash communities sentenced Jahangiryan to 3 years imprisonment. He was accused according to the article 316, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code (Use of force toward public agent). In his interview Gagik Jahangiryan stated, that it is not an amnesty, but something “half-pregnant”, to which authorities consented as a result of PACE and all-national movement pressure. As for his further steps, Gagik Jahangiryan stated, that he is just a member of the Armenian National Congress and will be guided by its decisions.

Recalling, on 19 February, 2008 were the presidential elections in Armenia and Serzh Sargsyan won the race. Levon Ter-Petrosyan with his supporters initiated twenty-for-hour protest actions. During the meeting in the centre of Yerevan on February 22, 2008 Jahangiryan joined the opposition movement headed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Within 10 days the opposition was staying in the “Azatutyan” square till March 1st, when policemen dispersed the demonstrators by truncheons. However, later they gathered in front of the city hall, near the French embassy. In the evening the authorities brought the troops. The clashes between opposition and police resulted in the death of 10 people, and over 200 were injured. The majority of opposition leaders, the members of parliament Hakob Hakobyan, Myasnik Malkhasyan, Sasun Mikaelyan, former head of MFA Alexander Arzumanyan, as well as former deputy Prosecutor General Gagik Jahangiryan were arrested. The supporters of Levon Ter-Petrosyan, including MP and businessman Khachatur Sukiasyan and “Haykakan Zhamanak” newspaper’s editor Nikol Pashinyan, were declared wanted by the police.
