Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he will leave the post of head of state a few days after announcing the holding of parliamentary elections. He said this in an interview with TV Pink, Danas reports.

According to Vucic, he announced his decision in advance so that opponents would not be able to accuse him of trying to avoid the elections. The president noted that he is ready to hold parliamentary and presidential elections simultaneously if necessary.

“I must announce the holding of parliamentary elections here, as President of the Republic, and then resign a few days later,” Vucic said.

He also expressed confidence that his political opponents overestimate the level of their support among the population. According to the Serbian president, the opposition previously claimed that it had the support of 70% of citizens, but now the question is “whether they have at least 30%.”

Earlier, Vucic addressed parliament, confirming his intention to resign. He said that he was perhaps addressing lawmakers for the last time as president and that his “last days and weeks” in this post were coming to an end.

Vucic’s statements came amid prolonged anti-government protests in Serbia, which began in December 2024 after the collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people.
