Renowned Hungarian chess player Judit Polgár said she was not ready to “accept historical responsibility and unite a divided nation,” DW reports.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar responded that he respected Polgár’s decision. Who will become the new candidate for the post of President of Hungary remains unclear.

Judit Polgár is the only woman who has managed to break into the world top 10 ranking of the strongest chess players. During her professional career, which she ended in 2014, she managed to defeat, among others, Garry Kasparov.

The candidacy of the 49-year-old “queen of chess” for the post of head of the Hungarian state, a largely ceremonial position, has been under discussion since July 19. Hungary’s previous president, Tamás Sulyok, who is considered an ally of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, left office.
