More than 170,000 residents of Spain were forced either to evacuate or to limit their movements because of the wildfires raging in recent days, the newspaper ABC reported, citing authorities' estimates.

Thus, in the provinces of Ávila, Toledo, and the area around Madrid, more than 63,000 people have been evacuated and nearly 28,000 have been required, for safety reasons, to remain in their homes.

Another approximately 16,000 people were evacuated in the province of Castellón, and 65,000 were asked not to leave their homes.

Firefighters in Spain, together with colleagues from a number of other countries, continue attempts to bring the fire outbreaks under control, but overall the situation remains tense for now.
