China's first “mid-engined” sports car, the SC-01, which its creators call “the car Lotus should have built,” will reach the UK in April 2027, Autocar reports.

The car combines an unusual layout for electric cars, light weight, and an emphasis on driving pleasure rather than record-breaking power.

In China, the model is already sold under the name Yichi 01 in the JMEV series, and now a right-hand drive version is being developed for the UK. It will cost about 50,000 pounds.

The car is built on its own space frame. The 60 kWh battery is located directly behind the seats, creating the impression of a mid-engine layout, and the two electric engines—one on each axle—produce a combined 429 horsepower. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes just 2.9 seconds.

At the same time, its developers emphasize that the main feature of the SC-01 is not its performance. According to Mark Cotton, the founder, boss and for now, sole employee of the Small Sports Car Company, this car should evoke the same feelings as the Lotus Elise: lightness, precise handling, and a “soul,” and not just impressive speed.

The car weighs about 1,380 kg, which is significantly lighter than most modern electric cars. Its suspension is fully manually adjustable, and the driver can choose front, rear, or all-wheel drive.

The cabin is extremely minimalistic: a small screen in front of the driver, transmission control buttons, and even a traditional mechanical handbrake. There is no central touchscreen or traditional electronic assistants.

The SC-01 was created in China by Chinese enthusiast Feng Xiaotong, who has previously restored and upgraded modern classics. He wanted to create an affordable electric sports car that would focus primarily on driving pleasure, rather than power records.

The SC-01 sales in the UK are being organized by the Small Sports Car Company, which plans to sell about 160 of these cars in the first year and increase this number to 360 in the third year.

According to Mark Cotton, this amount is enough for a niche sports car to ensure the success of the project.
