King Harald V of Norway has died in a hospital in Oslo at the age of 89, the royal palace press service said.

Harald V was hospitalized on August 17 due to complications from an infection and hemolytic anemia. He had not left the hospital since then.

On Thursday, the royal palace announced that his health had deteriorated and was considered severe.

Harald, a descendant of the House of Glucksburg, had been on the Norwegian throne since 1991.

His son Haakon, 53, will succeed him to the throne.
