The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 475, The Kathmandu Post reported on Friday.

“The death toll from Wednesday’s devastating Bhotekoshi flood has reached 475, according to police, while hundreds of people remain missing as search teams scour the river system and downstream areas for survivors and bodies,” the report said, in particular.

Reuters added that the situation is complicated by the threat of new flooding. A lake formed by a landslide on the Nepal-China border started to overflow. Due to the risk of a debris dam breaking and secondary disasters, Chinese rescuers were forced to suspend work and retreat to a safe zone.

On Friday, the lake's reservoir had topped 2.5 million cubic meters of water, up from the estimated 1.5-2 million cubic meters recorded a day earlier, before overflowing into the Bhotekoshi River, authorities and witnesses in Nepal said.

Chinese authorities warn that another 3 million cubic meters of water could enter the reservoir in the next three days, with the peak inflow expected on September 1.
