At around midnight, NATO fighter jets shot down a drone over Lithuania, the country's President Gitanas Nauseda said.

"I thank Allied personnel for their swift response," he added on X, without giving details.

According to LRT, the national public broadcaster of Lithuania, the drone had entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus just a few minutes after midnight. Residents of several regions were warned of a possible air threat.

About half an hour later, Italian fighter jets destroyed the drone. The debris fell near a village where only a few people live.

LRT notes that this is the first time that NATO fighters have destroyed a drone in the skies of Lithuania.

It is not yet clear whether it was a combat drone.

The Vilnius international airport temporarily had suspended operations due to the incident. According to Delfi, two flights from Antalya and Reykjavik were delayed.
