The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which is part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior of Germany, may start revoking en masse the protection status of Syrian refugees in the country, domestic policy experts from the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) party in the Bundestag have said, the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND) media group reports.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt plans to instruct the BAMF to massively revoke protection status from the aforesaid Syrians as early as this fall.

Alexander Throm, home affairs spokesman for the CDU/CSU group in the Bundestag, said in an interview with RND that inspections to revoke the right of residence in Germany shall start with “young men travelling alone who receive social assistance.” That is, they do not work and live at the expense of the German state. And people with permanent employment, he said, will have the opportunity to obtain official residence status in Germany.

Also, he emphasized that, in parallel with the cancellation of visas, it is necessary to develop a more effective program to “encourage voluntary return” of Syrian refugees. In his opinion, this should increase the desire to voluntarily leave Germany, since any voluntary departure “is cheaper than forced deportation.”

Throm added that the draft German state budget for 2027 already provides for an increase in benefits for voluntary departure. Currently, this benefit is 1,000 euros for each adult.
