The Anti-Corruption Committee of the Republic of Armenia (RA) confirmed to Armenian News-NEWS.am that searches are being conducted among the opposition Strong Armenia Party supporters in Stepanavan city.

“The searches and other procedural actions are being carried out within the framework of the criminal proceeding being conducted by the RA Anti-Corruption Committee. Fourteen people have been arrested. Additional information will be provided if necessary,” the Anti-Corruption Committee said.

Earlier, Andranik Gevorgyan, an MP from the opposition “Strong Armenia” Faction of the National Assembly, had informed on Facebook that widespread searches and arrests were being carried out in the Stepanavan region since early Wednesday morning among supporters of the opposition Strong Armenia party.

“The actions of the authorities are extremely predictable, but what is happening is already crossing the boundaries of reason. Yesterday’s demonstration of ‘democracy’ and today’s blatant illegalities are vivid proof of this,” Gevorgyan had added.

Local government elections are scheduled for Sunday in Stepanavan city. The Strong Armenia party has nominated Arsen Gevorgyan as its mayoral candidate there.
