YEREVAN. – The prosecution of opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) activists Sargis Gevorgyan, Davit Kiramijyan, Tigran Arakelyan and Artak Karapetyan is political prosecution and aims to stop them from announcing their political position. Lawyer Stepan Voskanyan commented on Prosecutor Hakob Martirosyan’s accusatory speech reported by Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Prosecutor Hakob Martirosyan asked the Judge to sentence Tigran Arakelyan to 6 years, Artak Karapetyan to 3 years and 6 months, Sargis Gevorgyan and Davit Kiramijyan to 2 years. Martirosyan asked to not apply Kiramijyan’s sentence. According to Stepan Voskanyan even if the accusations were valid, the sentences are too strict.

“The whole accusation is based on the preliminary and trial testimonies given by the police officers who are considered victims. However, there are contradictions between the testimonies of the two phases,” the lawyer said.
