It is not ruled out that situation in Nagorno-Karabakh might become beyond control of great powers, says the Stratfor Eurasia analyst Marko Papic. According to him, warlike statements voiced by both sides are the main reason for it, RFE/L Armenian service reports.

U.S. expert says that presently Armenia also does not rule out possibility of military solution to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Papic underlined that once Russia, Iran and Turkey might fiind themselves in the situation when they deal with conflict that is getting out of their hands.

These three states strengthen their positions in the region and the fate of further cooperation mainly depends on developments over Karabakh peace process.

“Russian interest from the start for this particular conflict has been to really involve Turkey in intractable conflict that cannot be solved. And this really wastes Turkey’s time and energy in a region where Russia feels very secure. It feels that it is not going to lose any leverage of either Armenia or Azerbaijan. For the more, Azerbaijan seems to be slowly drifting towards Russia as it feels spurned by Turkish negotiations with Armenia,” the expert says.

The expert considers that things could get beyond control not because Russia, Iran or Turkey wanted it but because simply the internal dynamics of the conflict of Azerbaijan and Armenia take over. “We have a situation like in 1914 when a local conflict in Bosnia created a global war,” Papic concludes.
