Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay signed the application by Van governor on opening of Surb Khach church on Akhtamar Island for services once a year.

According to Turkish Milliyet daily, Van Governor Munir Karaoglu expressed gratitude to the Minister, stressing that the decision will contribute to the development of spiritual tourism in Van.

Turkish Minister’s decision mentions that services might be conducted once a year in the second half of September, and precise date will be set by Van authorities.

NEWS.am recalls that earlier Gunay declared the church will not be open for services and cross will not be placed on the top, as Surb Khach is not included in the list of churches having permission for conduction of the like ceremonies.
