YEREVAN. – Soon there will be a political earthquake in Armenia. 

Former MP Hmayak Hovhannisyan, who is Chairman of the Politologists’ Union of Armenia, stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Friday. 

“The [pension reform protest] action on January 18 proved that the people have stood up. The authorities must have realized that the growing protest is accumulating earthquake energy, and there will be an [political] earthquake very soon,” Hovhannisyan said.

The political scientist also compared the ongoing political events in Armenia and the wave of protests in Ukraine. As per Hovhannisyan, both people are dissatisfied with the decision of their presidents to join the Russian-led Customs Union.     

“[Presidents] Yanukovych and Sargsyan understood very well that such a surprise decision would cause uproar. It is tense in all post-Soviet countries,” the former MP stated.

In Hovhannisyan’s words, the events in Ukraine and the Azerbaijani shots recently being fired at the Armenian border have come to prove that the situation is truly tense in the region. 

In response to the reporters’ query as to whether or not the Azerbaijani shots being fired are linked to the meeting to be held Friday between the Armenian and the Azerbaijani FMs, the political scientist stated:

“Azerbaijan again shows that it will resolve the [Nagorno-]Karabakh issue by force. [Armenia FM Edward] Nalbandian has to participate in this meeting, but he is being debased by participating.”
