YEREVAN. – The foolish are always more than the wise, Armenia’s opposition National Self-Determination Union (NSU) Chairman, ex-presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan stated at a press conference on Friday.

Hayrikyan noted the aforesaid commenting on numerous people’s wish to transition to a parliamentary system of governance in the country.

The NSU leader noted that there is but one general election—the parliamentary—in the case of a parliamentary republic, and the parliament selects the executive branch of power without the people’s participation.

“[But] in the case of a parliamentary-presidential system, as now [in Armenia], there are two national elections: [for] the parliament and the President. In the case of a presidential republic, there is a chance to elect not solely the President and the parliament, but partially the judicial system; and this means a higher level of democracy,” Paruyr Hayrikyan argued.
