Several US states’ recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), or Artsakh, people’s right to national self-determination is linked to the active work by the Armenian lobby organizations and our diplomatic representation in the US.    

NKR Security and Foreign Policy Public Council Chairman, NKR former Deputy FM Masis Mayilyan told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Mayilyan recalled that, on April 26, 2010, the council had called upon the Diaspora-Armenian organizations to launch a process toward NKR’s international recognition. 

“Therefore the [recent] adoption [by the US State of California] of the resolution on Artsakh is not an outcome of official Washington’s policy, but rather a result of correct classification of priorities,” Mayilyan concluded. 

On May 8, the California State Assembly, by a vote of 70-1, recognized the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, encouraging and supporting NKR’s continuing efforts to develop as a free and independent nation.

As a result, California has joined the US States of Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, and Louisiana, which already have recognized Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence.
