faction at the Armenia capital city Yerevan Council of Elders, had sent a letter to the Mayor of Yerevan.

In the letter, she had asked whether there is a citizens’ initiative to name the newly constructed Leningrad-Isakov avenue after Monte Melkonian.

Bakhshyan informed that the reply was that there is such an initiative and it will be submitted for discussion at a Council session.

“Let’s hope that it will be discussed at the next Council meeting, and the avenue’s [official] opening and naming will be [held] together.

“I believe the Yerevan residents will welcome this citizens’ initiative,” Anahit Bakhshyan stated.

Monte Melkonian was an American-born Armenian commander during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. He was killed in the abandoned Karabakh village of Merzuli on June 12, 1993. Melkonian was buried at Yerablur Military Pantheon in Yerevan, and is revered by Armenians as a national hero.
