YEREVAN. – Drinking and irrigation water should not aimlessly flow from Armenia to the Caspian Sea, PM Hovik Abrahamyan said in the parliament on Tuesday, while presenting new program of the government.

He noted that the construction of reservoirs will be one of the priorities of the new Cabinet. Drinking and irrigation water reserves exceed 7 billion cubic meters per year, of which the country uses only 2.3 billion.

“The rest flows into the Caspian Sea. We must build numerous reservoirs, it is very important for our future,” Abrahamyan told lawmakers.

He noted that in the coming years, the government plans to build or finish construction of Yeghvard,  Vedi , Kap and Mastarin reservoirs which will allow accumulate 145-180 billion cubic meters of irrigation water. A total of $250 million will be allocated, including foreign loan programs.

“So, we can decrease the burden on Lake Sevan during the irrigation season,” he concluded.
