YEREVAN. – Russia will never present Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan, Armenian turkologist Artak Shakaryan said at a press conference on Monday.
According to Shakaryan, official Moscow will seek to maintain the status quo, since this enables it to benefit from the situation.
“At the end of the day, a final solution to the problem is convenient neither for Russia, nor the US, nor Europe, nor [Azerbaijan president Ilham] Aliyev, nor the ruling regime in Yerevan,” the turkologist noted.
He stated that the politicians close to the Armenian authorities have come to power in parallel with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and they make use of this issue to maintain their positions.
At the same time, however, the analyst expressed a view that, sooner or later, the Karabakh conflict will be resolved in favor of the Armenians.
“We [Armenians] don’t have leverages of influence in the region from the economic point of view. But [official] Baku’s oil-based economy will crack, and the pro-Azerbaijani sentiments in the region will be replaced by the pro-Armenian [sentiments], which will enable the Armenians to pin victory,” Artak Shakaryan concluded.
