YEREVAN. – Expectation in connection with recognition of Armenian Genocide by Turkey are premature, expert on Turkic studies Viktor Nadein-Rayevsky told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Asked about an invitation to Turkish president to visit Armenia on April 24, 2015, he recalled that Erdogan had not commented in the issue, but his entourage said his visit will mean supporting a certain viewpoint.

“This means they are trying to pay the way to justify president's refusal to travel to Armenia. Erdogan's silence is a key point, since he seems to be calculating what will suit his policy. To call it a policy of recognition means to exaggerate,” said Nadein-Rayevsky, fellow of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of World Economy and International Relations.

At the same time he admits that Erdogan found himself in a difficult situation.

“What can one expect when an entire generation of Turks was brought up in hatred towards Armenians and other Christians who were considered traitors to the Ottoman homeland? Almost entire education in Turkey is based on non-recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Therefore, Erdogan knows that such recognition would lead to a surge of nationalism in Turkey,” the expert added.

He noted that it is unlikely that the policy will really change for the benefit of humanity and the adoption of universal values.
