The Heritage Party is making populist declarations to ensure 5% of votes for itself at the 2012 parliamentary, Eduard Sharmazanov, Secretary of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary faction told NEWS.am. He particularly commented on one of the points of the resolution approved by the Heritage Party on July 10, which says that “Armenia must become a really democratic and sovereign country of rule of law and fair elections. The officials that acquired property and enterprises at the cost of human lives, abusing their office, must be held responsible with all the rigors of the law.”

“If they know about particular crimes and violations of law, let them turn to the relevant bodies. In a democratic country a citizen informed of a crime is supposed to apply to the relevant bodies. In this case we will really become a democratic country,” Sharmazanov said. As to whether he knows about the officials that acquired their property at the cost of human lives, he said: “I do not, but if my counterparts from the Heritage Party do, let them apply to judicial bodies instead of gaining popularity through public statements.”

Speaking of the Heritage Party’s latest congress, Sharmazanov stressed that the party held it to gain reputation before the parliamentary elections. “A few months ago I said it, and I am saying it again: the three opposition forces – Heritage, Armenian National Congress and Armenian Revolutionary Federation – are struggling for a statement with the strongest oppositional bias to win the oppositional voters. They cannot get rid of their complex of exceeding the 5% barrier in the 2012 elections,” Sharmazanov said. He advised the Heritage Party to “do real work and find its niche in the political arena.”

The Heritage Party held its 6th congress on July 10. The congress elected a new Board chaired by Raffi Hovhannisyan.
