The Baku Court of Appeals on Friday examined Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova’s appeal against the lower court ruling on the extension of her detention period.

Attorney Yalcin Imanov informed Turan news agency of Azerbaijan that the appellate court, however, ruled against the appeal. Imanov added that, after this decision, they now will file an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights.

Ismayilova, for her part, again stated that the reason for her arrest was her journalistic investigation into the businesses of the family members of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.

Khadija Ismayilova, the loudest critic of the Azerbaijani government, was detained on December 5, 2014, in Azerbaijan. She is charged with pushing a person toward committing suicide. Ismayilova, on the other hand, denies the charges and finds that her arrest is because of her professional activities. On January 27, a district court had extended her detention period for another one month and nineteen days.

Amnesty International has recognized Khadija Ismayilova as “prisoner of conscience.”
