YEREVAN. – Reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey may give a positive result as soon as the societies are broadly involved in the process, German Ambassador to Armenia Matthias Kiesler said.

The diplomat said that political contacts should be preserved, but he is confident that diplomatic efforts only are not sufficient for achieving success. Emotions are probably the most difficult obstacle on the way to reconciliation.

“I can say that during the reconciliation processes between Germany and France, that remained enemies for centuries, and between Germany and Israel, people-to-people contacts were very important,” he said during a media conference dedicated to the first stage of program of Armenia-Turkey reconciliation.

This is the approach of DVV International – a project that will help to gather young people from both societies and start a dialogue feeling history on personal level, not the level of textbooks. The most important element of the project is a joint trip to Armenia and Turkey.

“Ten participants have been selected in both countries. They have already visited Gyumri, Talin, Etchmiadzin and Yerevan. September 22 is the last day of a project in Armenia, while the second stage will be held in Turkey next year,” Ambassador said, adding that funding of the project made 850,000 euro.
