YEREVAN. – A one-party state will form in Armenia within a year after the adoption of the constitutional amendments.

Opposition Freedom Party Chairman, former PM, and opposition Armenian National Congress National Assembly Faction member, economist Hrant Bagratyan, stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Monday.

“Armenia is facing major economic, social, [and] even military problems,” Bagratyan said. “If we had a bicameral parliament after the amendments, I would have said, ‘very good.’ But we will have a country that has a unicameral parliament, which often leads to dictatorship, even fascism.”

In his words, consequently, if anything bad were to happen in Armenia, there will be no one accountable for all this.

“Why are they amending [the Constitution] in these circumstances, when the border [with Azerbaijan] is tense?” the ANC MP asked. “This amendment may be linked to Karabakh.”

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
