YEREVAN. – Head of the Joint Opposition Headquarters of the “New Armenia” Public Salvation Front—which fights against the proposed constitutional amendments in the country—Jirair Sefilian, met with representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) referendum observation mission. 

The Joint Opposition Headquarters issued a respective statement, in which it is noted that the interlocutors discussed “New Armenia’s” outlook on the constitutional amendments, the forthcoming referendum on these amendments, and the relevant campaigning of the said front.

Sefilian told OSCE/ODIHR observers that it is impossible in Armenia to engage in political activities through classical methods, and to achieve results by way of elections, or referendums. 

He also informed about the results of the relevant campaign activities by “New Armenia.” 

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments will be conducted on Sunday.

Pursuant to the proposed amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
