YEREVAN. – The national minorities of Armenia welcome the proposed constitutional amendments because they will enable them to have their MPs.

Head of the Kurdish community of Armenia, Knyaz Hasanov, stated the above-said at a press conference on Friday.

“It’s all the same for us [whether] the PM or the President will rule the country,” Hasanov said. “On the other hand, we welcome these amendments, since (…) the justice, the judicial system is reformed.”

As per chairman Arsen Mikhailov of the Assyrian “Atur” NGO, with these constitutional amendments, Armenia will be taking one step forward toward human rights.

And the chairman of “Ilios” Greek community of capital city Yerevan, Slava Rafaelidis, said he personally visited several villages in Armenia and campaigned for the referendum.

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments will be conducted on Sunday.

Pursuant to the proposed amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
