YEREVAN. – Rejecting the constitutional amendments means leaving the current Constitution, which enables the “reproduction” of the ruling power in Armenia.

Aghvan Vardanyan, who is Secretary of the National Assembly Faction of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun Party which supports the proposed amendments, said the aforementioned at a press conference on Friday.

In his words, throughout the campaigning for the upcoming referendum on these amendments, the ARF representatives had around sixty meetings in capital city Yerevan and in the provinces.

“While we were substantiating our view [on these amendments], the opposite camp was making [just] two main arguments,” Vardanyan stressed. “First [that], the authorities initiated the [proposed constitutional] reforms; and second, since the authorities initiated the reforms, it means the main objective is ‘reproduction [of their power].’”

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments will be conducted on Sunday.

Pursuant to the proposed amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.
