As a result of Saudi Arabia’s local elections, women will have garnered 20 seats among the local authorities for the first time in country’s history, reported RIA Novosti news agency of Russia.

Local elections were held in Saudi Arabia on December 12, in which women cast a ballot and also stood as candidates for the first time.

A total of 979 women had registered as candidates, alongside close to 6,000 men.

And women made up about 10 percent of the voters.
