Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, who is paying a working visit to the Swiss city of Geneva, on Monday met with the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

High Commissioner Al Hussein commended Armenia’s strong stance and continuous efforts in the prevention of new acts of genocide, and stressed that today the international community is acting more decisively in the prevention of crimes against humanity. In this regard, Minister Nalbandian stressed that, “as a nation, which survived the first genocide of the 20th century, we [i.e. Armenians] feel obliged to undertake steps in consolidation of international community’s efforts to exclude new crimes against humanity.”

Human rights due to the situation unfolded in the Middle East, and minorities issues and the steps to resolve them were discussed during the talk. In this connection, it was noted that Armenia has sheltered nearly 20 thousand refugees from Syria.

Also, the interlocutors reflected on human rights in Armenia. In this context, Edward Nalbandian stressed that effective relevant cooperation has been established between Armenia and the international organizations dealing with human rights.

And upon the UN High Commissioner’s request, Nalbandian presented the efforts exerted by Armenia and the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
