YEREVAN. – If the facts on the Azerbaijanis’ torture of captured Armenian soldiers are confirmed, another legal assessment shall be given to what occurred. 

Elinar Vardanyan, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs of the National Assembly (parliament) of Armenia, stated about the abovementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

“The key task at this moment is to ascertain this fact and collect materials about the crimes committed,” the MP noted. “If the fact of torture is confirmed, this implies another legal assessment and approach, with which we need to apply other international norms.”

Vardanyan noted, however, that neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan have joined the Rome Statute treaty, and this curtails the relevant prospects.

At the same time, she added that diplomatic counteraction needs to be launched against a potential démarche by the adversary.
