Upon the initiative of Egypt, the UN Security Council held a session on Wednesday regarding the counteraction to the dissemination of extremist ideology.

By 30 April 2017, the Security Council is going to develop measures on struggle against the propaganda campaign carried out by terrorist organizations and search for supporters via the Internet and social networks. 

In his address, Egyptian FM Sameh Shoukry recalled the recent attacks of terrorists on the Cairo policemen and the large-scale terrorist act at Brussels airport. The Security Council members honored the memory of those killed by observing a minute of silence.

In a unanimously adopted statement, the members of the Security Council noted that the Islamic State and Al Qaeda terrorist groups disseminate distorted facts and propaganda materials, which are based on wrong interpretation and presentation of religion in order to justify violence, find supporters and foreign terrorist fighters, as well as to get support.  

Information and communication technologies, including the Internet and social networks, are used to this end.

During the session, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson expressed special concern about the impact of the terrorist propaganda on youth.  According to him, the young people can be subjected to the influence of the terrorists, which give them a feeling of complicity, salary, promises of fame and even heaven, RIA Novosti reports.
