Thursday night’s terror attack in Nice, France, occurred around 100 meters from the restaurant belonging to an Armenian by the name of Vahik Sahakyan.

He told Armenian News-NEWS.am that his restaurant was crowded in the evening, but many of their customers had temporarily left at around 10pm local time to watch the  fireworks and then return.

“And we started to tidy the tables so that everything would be ready when they returned,” said Sahakyan. “Suddenly, we saw around 200 to 300 people coming to our restaurant, running, panic-stricken. There were tables, flowers outside; they passed and ran while breaking them. We didn’t understand what was happening. We quickly brought the customers inside, closed the door, and stayed inside for about two hours.”

The Armenian restaurateur, however, had learned about the terrorism from friends and the Internet. He himself had not heard any shots.

“When we came out, there were corpses in the streets, there were dead people everywhere, helicopters were landing and transporting the bodies of the people,” added Vahik Sahakyan. “There are numerous injured at hospitals; they say there are no more places in hospitals.”

A truck ploughed into crowd in high speed in downtown Nice on Thursday at around 10։30pm, during Bastille Day celebrations.

Subsequently, its driver opened fire on people before police shot him dead.

Large quantities of weapons and explosives were found in the truck.

The driver of the truck was a 31-year-old French and Tunisian citizen. He previously was at the focus of the police for committing theft and hooliganism. 

According to most recent reports, 84 people are dead and 18 others are in very critical condition as a result of this terror attack.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informed that an Armenian citizen was among the casualties of this tragedy.
