After the detentions of Turkey’s  pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) deputies, the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern over the scale of measures taken by the country in response to the failed coup attempt, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary General is concerned by the scale of the dismissals, which  followed the July coup attempt and which also involved parliament members and other elected officials, like yesterday’s detention of the HDP co-chairs and other parliamentarians.

He also added that the head of the organization is concerned by the growth of restrictions in regard to media and journalists. In this connection, Ban Ki-moon urged the Turkish authorities to take measures for protecting the fundamental rights and principles in the country.

HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ as well as nine other Kurdish members of the Turkish parliament were detained on Thursday night.
