On October 21-22, Armenian and Azerbaijani representatives delivered speeches at “Regional disarmament and security” discussions in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, RA Foreign Office press service informed NEWS.am.

The Azerbaijani representative read out a statement, inconsistent with the subject of discussions and word-for-word repeated trite arguments of Baku’s propaganda machine,  particularly on Armenia’s  “aggression”, “expansionist policy” and ”ethnic cleansings”.

In his speech, the Armenian representative firstly touched upon the recent achievements on UN disarmament agenda and expressed unquestioning support for the activities in this direction, as well as readiness for cooperation. He also referred to security issues in the South Caucasus, attaching significance to the fulfillment of international commitments in the field of disarmament and stressed the danger of the current arms race in terms of international and regional security.

During the discussions the Armenian side also voiced Azerbaijan’s attempts to mislead the world community, stressing the unprecedented increase of Azerbaijan’s military budget and failure to provide adequate information for annual reports in the UN, to ensure transparency of disarmament. The members of the delegation emphasized that Baku’s present policy jeopardizes regional security, stability and leads international efforts to a deadlock.

A few days ago UN officially put into circulation report of the UN Secretary-General, “Conventional arms control at regional and sub-regional levels”, which addressed the violations of a treaty on conventional arms in Europe by Azerbaijan.
