The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities considered the report of Armenia and expressed concern about the situation of children with disabilities. 

The experts are dissatisfied with the fact that the medical staff encourages parents of disabled children to leave them in the care of the state.  Several thousands of such children are still in institutions where they are at risk of violence and abuse, Radio UN reports.  

According to the experts, the “medical approach” to disability prevails in the country, this supposing treatment of people with disabilities as first of all sick people, who need treatment, this restricting their social opportunities.

They also stressed that the Armenian authorities are trying to change the situation in the country in regard to people with disabilities and expressed hope that the conclusions of the Committee will help them achieve these goals.
