The independence of Southern Sudan is another precedent, which advanced the arguments by the Armenian side in both legal and political arenas, Deputy Director of Caucasus Institute Sergey Mansyan told the reporters on January 22.

“However, it should be remembered the conflict is in the South Caucasus, not in Sudan. Besides, crucial steps were taken during Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s visit to Cyprus. Taking into account all the peculiarities, it should be remembered Cyprus is an EU member,” the political scientist noted.

As NEWS.am reported previously, a referendum on independence for Southern Sudan was held from 9 to 15 January 2011. According to preliminary information, about 97.5 % of the voters in Southern Sudan’s capital voted for independence.
