One day Turkey will recognize the Armenian Genocide, Turkish human rights activist Ragip Zarakolu said in Yerevan.

Talking to the journalists, he noted Genocide recognition will not harm Turkey’s image as many countries have recognized the fact.  Zarakolu stressed Turkey should recognize mistakes of the past to prevent such crimes in the future.  

“I have been struggling for the Armenian Genocide affirmation since 1993 and will adhere to my position in the future. I have a dream. I believe one day Turkey will recognize the Armenian Genocide,” he said.   

The human rights activist considers dialogue between the people of two states is more important than high-level meetings. “However, Turkey does not create favorable conditions for improvement of the Armenian-Turkish relations. Moreover, the government is publishing books denying the fact of the Armenian Genocide which makes Turks dislike Armenians,” Zarakolu stressed.

Speaking of a compensation, he noted a person has the right to demand compensation if his rights were violated. “Even if Armenia and Turkey reach any agreement on the issue, they cannot ban descendants of Genocide survivors from restoring their rights,” he concluded.
