Turkish human rights activist and publisher Ragip Zarakolu was awarded Hakob Meghapart medal for condemnation of the Armenian Genocide and crimes against humanity, as well as adherence to humanitarian values.

He is one of few Turks who recognize the Armenian Genocide and are struggling for its affirmation. For his actions Zarakolu was persecuted in Turkey.

Zarakolu said he is happy to get the medal, noting Turkish human rights activist do not doubt that crime committed by Turkey against Armenians in 1915 is qualified as genocide.    

He said that first learn about the Armenian Genocide from his mother. “I like Armenia, Armenians, your culture and history,” he added.

Ragip Zarakolu, who headed the Belge Publishing House, was charged for publishing Turkish translation of George Jerjian’s “The Truth Will Set Us Free: Armenians and Turks Reconciled” book.
