Turkey-pursued policy towards Armenia is indescribably double-faced. The international community was seriously misled before Armenian President’s initiative on Armenia-Turkey rapprochement, Head of the European Integration analytic center Karen Bekaryan told a press conference on February 17, commenting on Turkish President Abdullah Gul’s intention to ask his Armenian counterpart for help in getting a Turkish representative elected OSCE Chief Secretary.
According to Bekaryan, Turkey succeeded in persuading the world community that it is positive towards Armenia by these steps. However, the Armenian side negated Turkey’s aspirations to establish “good-neighborly” relations. Presently major players, who stand behind Armenia-Turkey Protocols’ signing in Zurich have adopted quite a negative attitude towards Turkey, which led to the failure of Armenia-Turkey reconciliation.
“This move aims to show that Turkey is positive towards Armenia. Getting a refusal of the Armenian side, it will try to shift the blame onto Yerevan again for the interrupted process of Armenia-Turkey reconciliation.
Turkey made every effort to be involved in the Karabakh conflict resolution. In this case OSCE is the structure to resolve Karabakh conflict settlement. In this regard, following code of international ethics, Turkey asks Armenia for help, a country keenly interested in the issue as if it displays good will, Bekaryan emphasized.
As for the Armenian side’s response to Turkey, Bekaryan expressed unequivocal solidarity that Armenia should have refused Turkey publicly. “One cannot leave the borders closed with a neighboring country and pursue a policy of coercion towards it. I think Armenian Foreign Ministry should have explained all reasons for its refusal,” he noted.
“Turkey is not a loyal and friendly neighbor of Armenia. Azerbaijan feels more confident and blatant in the negotiation process on Nagorno-Karabakh due to Turkey-backed policy,” Bekaryan underscored.
