The U.N. General Assembly suspended Libya’s membership in the U.N. Human Rights Council because of violence by pro-Gaddafi forces against protesters. The resolution was adopted by consensus in the 192-member Assembly, RIA Novosti reports.

The suspension was made by a recommendation from the Geneva-based council. It accused Libyan authorities of “gross and systematic violations of human rights” because of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s violent repression of peaceful protestors demanding his ouster.
