Ms. Dafina Gercheva, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Armenia, has condemned the March 3 incident in Republic Square in Yerevan. At her meeting with journalists March 4, she said that such incidents are not supposed to take place.

Ms. Gercheva pointed out that she strongly objects to any use of force against citizens that exercise their rights. She is informed of the Armenian Prime Minister`s decision on a proper investigation of the incident. As a U.N official, Ms. Gercheva said that the U.N. condemns any violence against citizens. In commenting such incidents it is necessary to listen to both sides, she said. Ms. Gercheva pointed out that the Yerevan Mayor, acting in conformity with the law, prohibited street trading. Neither the Armenian authorities nor the Yerevan Municipality turn a blind eye to the problem. Also, they offer alternative solutions, the UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia said.
