Libya called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after Western states launched air strikes on Libya, General People’s Committee of Libya said in a televised statement.

Jamahiriya considers it has a right to use its military aircrafts for self-defense. According to the statement, the Western allies themselves violated resolution 1973 of Security Council, imposing no-fly zone over Libya, RBK reports.

A wave of unrest continues in Libya since February. The demonstrators protest against leader Muammar Gaddafi who has been in power for more than 40 years. Gaddafi’s opponents seized many cities in the eastern part of the country. Clashes between rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces continue.
