U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch is closely monitoring publications in the Armenian press and situation in the country, she told the journalists on Wednesday.

Welcoming the processes aimed at reducing tension the Ambassador noted “Armenia must act itself, whereas U.S. should not play any role in country’s domestic political developments. “But we are following the process,” she added.

As regards U.S. position on persons involved in the March 1, 2008 events the diplomat welcomed the amnesty declared by the Armenian authorities. Ambassador Yovanovitch stressed civil society had been formed in the country earlier than the republic gained independence.

Yovanovitch noted that no government can provide a solution to existing problems without public support. “The U.S., in its turn, is determined to promote democratic and economic development in Armenia,” she resumed.
