YEREVAN. – Narek Malyan, leader of the opposition VETO movement, released yellow smoke into the air during the protest in front of the Constitutional Court of Armenia.
"When the conclave elects the President of the Constitutional Court, or the Pope, it releases smoke [into the air]," Malyan said. “We didn't have a white smoke; we released yellow smoke. The point is that everything in the Constitutional Court is the same; the yellow smoke means that."
Malyan added that he is here in support of Constitutional Court president Hrayr Tovmasyan.
"For more than a year, the most mystical, most bizarre events have been happening around Hrayr Tovmasyan," he said. "Hrayr Tovmasyan does not surrender, every day he comes to work as usual, which bespeaks the high dignity and manly credentials."
Narek Malyan added that today no one is afraid of being arrested.
The Special Investigation Service (SIS) officers were in the Constitutional Court and were interviewing president Hrayr Tovmasyan of the Constitutional Court. A picket is also taking place in the courtyard of the court. There are politicians and lawyers there, too.
Yesterday, President Armen Sarkissian signed a package of laws enabling the current Constitutional Court judges to apply for early retirement.
Soon after, the SIS investigators went to the Constitutional Court, but it was unclear what the purpose was.
It was later reported that the SIS had filed an additional charge against Norayr Panosyan, whose wedding best man was Hrayr Tovmasyan, and on these grounds again petitioned to the court to arrest Panosyan again.
