YEREVAN. - Russian military base in Armenian Gyumri has been ensuring Armenia’s security from threats coming from Turkey since it was established, said political expert Tevan Poghosyan.

“Turkey has not established diplomatic relations, it has not opened the border and has pursued anti-Armenian policy. The [Russian military] base was ensuring security for Turkey not to launch any actions,” he told RFE/RL.

It is clear that NATO’s biggest army is on the other side.

“Even one bullet reaching Armenia is firing at Russian soldier,” Poghosyan added. “It is clear that 3,000 soldiers would not fight against Turkish army but would ensure a security component provided by Armenia.”

Last August Russia and Armenia signed an agreement prolonging the presence of the Russian military base stationed in Gyumri city, Armenia, until 2044.
