YEREVAN. - It is hard to say whether U.S. President Barack Obama will utter the word “genocide” during his annual proclamation marking April 24, secretary of the ruling Republican party of Armenia, MP Eduard Sharmazanov told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
Sharmazanov stressed in fact candidate Obama had repeatedly stated he recognized the Armenian Genocide. Being in office Obama said he had not changed his position on the issue, the MP stressed recalling that last year he failed to pronounce the G-word.
Sharmazanov said that Secretary of State Clinton’s visit to the Genocide memorial during her trip to Armenia last year also displays Washington’s attitude towards the Armenian issue.
“We definitely want Obama to utter the word “genocide” but it will be conditioned by political environment mainly,” he said.
Until the world recognizes the Armenian Genocide, there is a possibility that such crimes may reoccur in the future, he added.
Summing up, member of the Armenia’s ruling party stressed in any case Armenians will press for international recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
