China has announced a plan to provide developing countries with 10 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the global COVAX initiative, AP reported.

Chinese MFA spokesman Wang Wenbin said China has responded to a request from the World Health Organization as developing countries seek to fill a deficit that is projected to remain in March. He did not provide details on what kind of vaccine China supplied COVAX.

Coordinated by the World Health Organization and the GAVI Vaccine Alliance, COVAX aims to provide low- and middle-income countries with ample supplies of vaccines, as wealthy countries have purchased a significant portion of the billions of future doses primarily from Western vaccine manufacturers.

COVAX provided only a fraction of the 2 billion doses it hopes to buy in 2021. Last month, Pfizer pledged to deliver up to 40 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine this year via COVAX.
