Jakarta authorities are threatening residents with fines of up to 5 million rupees ($ 356.89) for refusing to vaccinate against COVID-19, Reuters reports.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria said city officials are simply following the rules.

Indonesia aims to vaccinate 181.5 million of its 270 million population in 15 months through a vaccination program that began last month.

Earlier this month, the Indonesian president signed a decree according to which anyone who refuses to get vaccinated can be denied social assistance or government services or pay a fine.

The penalty will be determined by regional health agencies or local governments.
