The strategy of major economies to replace Russian energy raw materials can create a long-term dependence on fossil fuels, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday, TASS reported.

"As major economies pursue an “all-of-the-above” strategy to replace Russian fossil fuels, short-term measures might create long-term fossil fuel dependence and close the window to 1.5 degrees," the secretary-general said, speaking online at The Economist magazine's British conference on sustainable development.

"Countries could become so consumed by the immediate fossil fuel supply gap that they neglect or knee-cap policies to cut fossil fuel use. This is madness," he noted.

According to the secretary-general, reliance on these sources is "mutually assured destruction." Guterres believes that this makes the world economy and energy security dependent on geopolitical upheavals and crises.
