A record 27,595 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in China on Sunday, most of the new cases were in Shanghai, according to data from the State Committee for Health of China.

According to the committee, over the past day in China, 1,184 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 26,411 asymptomatic cases were detected, which are considered separately in China.

Most of the new cases have been identified in Shanghai, located in the east of the country. On Sunday, 914 confirmed local and 25,173 asymptomatic cases were identified in the city.

The authorities of the metropolis, where 24.9 million people live, have introduced a lockdown since March 28 in connection with a new outbreak of coronavirus infection.

According to the plan of the authorities, the lockdown, necessary to conduct two rounds of mass testing and prevent the spread of the disease, was to take place in two stages: from March 28 to April 1 in areas east and south of the Huangpu River and from April 1 to April 5 in areas west of the Huangpu River. However, due to the detection of a large number of infected people, the lockdown period was extended, it is not yet specified for how long.
